Thames Water: Sewage Drains Upgrade

Thames_Water_logoThames Water and its partners are working on proposals to improve the sewer network in the Haydon End area. They need to increase the storage capacity of the sewer network to help reduce the risk of sewer flooding and to allow for future housing developments in the area.

They are proposing to build two large underground storage tanks and the pipework necessary to connect them to the local sewer network. Some parts of the design require them to submit planning applications to Swindon Borough Council, and they would appreciate your feedback.

What they’re doing

The scheme has two different sites – shown as Queen Elizabeth Drive North (QED North) and Queen Elizabeth Drive South (QED South) on the map below. They’ll submit two planning applications – one for each site.

The items that need planning consent are:

• A pressure relief column six metres high and 25cm in diameter at each site.
• A lighting column at each site, they are four metres high and will only be used for maintenance work that is outside daylight hours and operational emergencies.
• A control panel housed in a new kiosk three metres long, two metres high and one metre wide.
• We will also be creating a new layby at the Queen Elizabeth Drive South site and an access road at the Queen Elizabeth Drive North site. These are to create safe parking zones for Thames Water’s operational team, including a tanker if required.

The two tanks and associated connections do not require planning permission as they will be underground.

They would like to submit the applications soon but would like to show you the plans and hear your views about the proposals.

The whole scheme will take around a year to finish and they hope to start work on site later this summer.
